Severstal

August 13, 2002

Severstal began production of macadam-sand mix for road construction

Production capacity of this product is estimated at 30,000 a month. Ready to use macadam-sand mix is utilized in the construction of a foundation layer of roads. The product was tested in the construction of roads in Cherepovets district. It was observed that macadam-sand mix is capable of self-solidification, therefore assuring durability of foundation layers of roads, decreasing the number of jobs performed in road construction and shortening the process.

IThe macadam-sand mix is made at the Hercules grinding and sorting device, which was set to operation in 1998 to recycle waste. Since then the device sorted 330,000 tones of metal containing materials (including alloyed and non-corrosive scrap) and 44,000 tones of heat resistant scrap. However, 85-90 % of Hercules output was gob, which was used by Severstal itself for the construction of the levee around the plant.

Comprehensive research done by Severstal employees and the scientific research center Oniks, which specializes in controlling road maintenance in the Northwestern region of Russia, has confirmed the possibility of using gob in road construction. Severstal has also received proof of environmental safety of this product.

In 2001, Severstal sold 232,000 tones of blast furnace macadam and 660,000 tones of electric arc furnace macadam. In seven months of 2002, Severstal shipped 83,000 tones of blast furnace macadam and 616,000 tones of electric arc furnace macadam.
