MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

June 5, 2002

On June 4, AO MOSENERGO met with representatives from Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.

The world’s leading producer of fiber-optic equipment, Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., has presented its products to AO MOSENRGO. This event was arranged with assistance from a universal Japanese trading house—Marubeni Corporation and the division for external economic relations of AO MOSENRGO. The presentation was part of the program for expanding AO MOSENRGO’s ties and inquiring into new high-tech power equipment.

At the presentation, Furukawa Electric demonstrated various types of fiber optic cables used in high voltage electric lines, including the dielectric self-carrying aerial cable (ADSS) and the cable in an anti-thunder storm line (OPGW). It was noted that this type of the cable could prove especially valuable in conditions of cold weather, as it is not vulnerable to ice accumulation.

The unique quality of technologies used by the Japanese company to lay cables in the air is that they do not require power cut-off in the process of replacing cable. Replaced lines are removed only after the new ones have been installed. According to Hiroyuki Uebayashi, design department spokesman of Furukawa Electric, the level of expenditures grows in average 10–20% as compared to expenditures on traditional assembly methods. Furukawa also presented fiber-optic cables that are used in underwater, underground construction and in tunnels. Separately, they also demonstrated assembly equipment for dielectric self-carrying cables used in distribution lines.

After the presentation, both parties held negotiations to discuss opportunities for further cooperation between the two companies.

AO MOSENRGO has been using fiber optic cables since 1993. Presently, the total length of the fiber optic grid is about 1500 km. High voltage aerial cables account for approximately 100 km. The main suppliers in this area are currently Finnish and French producers.
