July 31, 2008. On July 31 at 00:19 Moscow time the electric power supplies from Georgia to the Russian Federation were commenced through Kavkasioni high voltage line. This became the first step in the execution of the scheme approved by power engineers of OJSC INTER RAO UES and their Georgian counterparts in terms of launching seasonal two-way supplies and transit of Russian electricity through Georgian electric power system to Turkey.
The concluded agreements enable to run the scheme in the estimated annual cycle (summer 2008 – summer 2009) and provide for the possibility of their extension.
The peak supply capacity from Georgia to the RF will be around 370-380 MW (currently – 250 MW) which would enable to fully utilize transmission capacity of the intergovernmental transmission lines.
The scheme also stipulates for continuation of the practice of mutual supplies in case of any emergencies.
